I am not happy. My Powerbook’s hard drive failed on Saturday. Competely. I’m writing this up on the PC, which is fine for the blogs and gmail. I can’t do anything else, but I remembered that I don’t really do anything else. The good news is that I backed up my drive a while ago. The bad news is that I backed it up quite a while ago. Several months ago in fact. So I’ve lost my email database (no one sends me email to my POP addresses anyway), my photos (annoying, but not life-threatening) and some movies (ditto).
Much more annoying is that there is a mouse, or mice, in my flat. This shortly after a friend of mine related his woes of mouse attack.
There are some things I could try, but all of them involve buying a new hard drive for my machine, a 60GB 2.5″ IDE - which at about £90 is beyond my means. I really should sell the car now.
Geoff told me that there are many stories of people freezing the offending drive in a ziploc back overnight, which upon re-insertion, miraculously gives them up to half an hour more life. I will try this once I get a spare drive. And of course, once I’ve found a way of opening my Mac, which appears to have the tiniest screws in the history of technology. Anyone know where I can get a nanodriver?
My output will be sporadic and somewhat limited until I get my Mac back on track. Any help or advice appreciated!

People say that anything from 10 minutes to a week in the freezer can help. If you know any secondary school teachers or pupils, could they get someone in metalwork to make you a tool?
Do you think Bill Gates employs rodent terror squads to persecute pro-Apple bloggers?
If you’re using the PC now, make sure FireFox, ZoneAlarm and AdAware are up to date. For a virus checker, try grisoft.com. It requires minimal registration for the free version.
P.S. I promise that I will never, ever, ever, mention Friday, November 19. Ouch.
P.P.S. SKA & DE: Sorry, I didn’t get around to replying to an earlier thread that ended with mention of Python. If you want to continue it, may I suggest email or a meeting?

And I promise I won’t mention our 2-1 victory on Sunday.
Letme quote my title in case anyone’s forgotten, or couldn’t be arse to read the first time - “The Mac Just Works”.
Ouch.
Well, I guess I was asking for it. Let me rephrase.
The Mac Just Sits There Looking Like A Stupidly Impotent Pile of Designer Shit. Thanks for the help by the way. I will get back to the Mac again. But I’m not sure I’ll ever look at it quite the same way again.

It’s your birthday soon, isn’t it? Ahem. Cough.
