George & Katrina

by shahid on August 31, 2005

If nothing else, Hurricane Katrina gave George W. Bush a nice ‘out’ from meeting Cindy Sheehan. Racism is still rife in his native south though, as the following reports show:

The black person has been “looting” a grocery store, but the white people have been “finding” food at a grocery store.

And just in case you think Associated Press reports are consistent in their labelling, you might want to tell me about these white “shoppers” who have just stepped out of a broken groecery store window. I wonder why they didn’t use the door? Or any money?

This is the “freedom” that America wants to export. Excuse me while I attempt to laugh off the nausea induced by the stench of hypocrisy.

Looks like Mississippi is still Burining in the offices of the Associated Press.

Too bad the US army is busy in Iraq, o/w they could have been mobilised into Louisiana to shoot looters like they did in Baghdad back in the day.

I live in South London but have spent a lot of time in the American South over the years. The discrimination and extreme poverty is there alright. The distance between party New Orleans and 3rd World New Orleans is barely a couple of blocks in places. But one thing always struck me as a white man in places like Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

I get a lot less shit in those places for being white than in Lambeth.

How does that work?

why did you call them “white” shoppers in the last image when two of the three people in the shot are obviously black? (yes there is a lady behind the glass door) And the chap jumping out of the window is not holding anything so are you sure they are actually looters?http://news.yahoo.com/photos/ss/events/ts/080304tropicalweathe/im:/050831/480/wxs11908310010;_ylt=AtWeq.1Bt0C0mN97uYehKoxiWscF;_ylu=X3oDMTA3dmhrOGVvBHNlYwNzc20-

I sent an email to the AP asking the same question you posed. I’ll post any response they might send

Hungry bellies know no laws.

I have a feeling that Katrina is going to unveil a histry of incompetence, negelct, massive boondoggling and sheer lies.

It is already identifying the weakness of using the National Guard to shoot people in Iraq rather than help the infratsructure of flooded Souht — of which there was plenty of warning — the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in May said a big one was overdue and raised the prospect of landfall from 20% to 33% in the Gulf.

Energy planners in IN have been basing emergency plans on just such an event for over two years as the normal 75 yr cycle of massive hurricanes was due to hit the Gulf.

In had 2.09 inches of rain yesterday, a 123 year record when 1.32 inches fell. yet there was only temporary flooding and within hours and overnight the floods had gone.

Gas is posted at $3.69 per gallon.

Valero the biggest refiner of gas (petrol limeys) shares rose 10% on the NYSE today (Wed).

The last picture - slip of the keyboard - the one I’m interested in is the one referred to in the article as someone looking through their “shopping bag” and pointed at by the big red sign that says “shopping”.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake though. The earlier stuff still applies, but it just goes to show, I need to be exceptionally vigilant.
