Steven Green, 21, and a former private with the US army’s 101st Airborne Division, based in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was charged under military law with four counts of murder and one of rape.
If convicted, he could face the death penalty. He appeared in court in North Carolina yesterday, and was expected to be returned to Kentucky for further proceedings.
Mr Green’s arrest came as new details emerged about the alleged atrocity in the town of Mahmudiya, suggesting that the rape victim, identified by the Washington Post yesterday as Abeer Qasim Hamza, was as young as 15 years old. Reuters news agency put the woman’s age at 16, and US officials have said the woman was 20 or 25. Her sister, who was also killed, may have been as young as seven.
It also emerged that Mr Green had been discharged from the military because of a personality disorder after serving 11 months in Iraq.
His arrest marks the fifth war crimes inquiry by the Pentagon in recent weeks, and because of the extreme sensitivities attached to sexual offences and family honour in Muslim communities threatens to further inflame anti-American sentiment in Iraq and around the world.
Notwithstanding the fact that these men raped and killed 15-year-old Abeer Qasim Hamza and her 7-year-old sister, it is the nadir of despicability to which the American authorities have sunk to by (read evil, raping, murderers, butchers, looters, hypocrites, scum, bastards, nation-fuckers, despoilers and all-round-mom’s-apple-pie-scoffing-motherfucking-cocksucking-cunts) trying to say that she was 20 to 25. Not that it makes a huge amount of difference, but are we to believe anything the Americans ever say about anything ever again? Would we be that stupid and gullible? Come on! Reuters and the Washington Post make her a young girl.

Thank you for your balanced and considered comment. I was very emotional when I wrote this piece. I totally associated with the family whose young daughter was gang-raped, who were then all shot and burned.

Rape is the most hideous crime, I abhor it. However, my anger at America is more because of the hypocrisy than for the gang-rape. When Bush talked of freeing Iraq of the rape-cells, he didn’t mention that he’d keep Abu Ghraib open and continue the abhorrent practice. He didn’t mention Hadith and a hundred other such cases.
As for the tribal council rape, was I as worked up? I was pretty fucking upset, I’ll tell you that. I’ll write about such things when we in the West get our own house in order. Remember, we are supposed to be the beacons. It is the hypocrisy that gets me.
It is the utter destruction of a society and it’s destruction from outside that is repugnant and should be spoken up against. I would abhor any rape, but if Bush continues to do what he does, whilst holidaying and not visiting the funeral of a single one of the over 2500 of his own soldiers in Iraq, then only an outright attack on the man and his family might wake him up. It is the Hiroshima argument I guess, and not one I’m proud of.
I too felt unbelievable anger towards the men that committed this horrific rape and murder. It is one of the worst crimes I have ever heard about and it shocked and sickened me to my stomach. But please, in your anger do not tar the whole of ‘America’ with the brush that should be applied to the sick individuals who committed this crime. American soldiers are people like everyone else. They have been put into a land where they are hated and where they have dehumanised all Iraqis, civilian or military. To the cruel men that committed this act, the people they raped and killed were not even people, but sub-humans. That is what occupation and war can do to people.
