Yep, muslims are no better than non-muslims and no worse either, nor are they a race any more than are christians. There are too many issues racism, religion and nationalism combined with natural resources water, oil, gas, live stock, food producing land, access to shipping, power and control and plain old greed. People tend to get offensive when these concerns overlap. I am with GM “stop the hate, work for peace,” and I will add, justice. Peace.

There is no voice of the “Muslim Community”. It is too diverse to either be addressed as a monlithic block, or to be led as a monolithic block.

My voice is probably not atypical for a Muslim, other than the swearing.

Dear Man in a Shed: yes, I’ve spent time in Pakistan and have maintained fairly regular contact with family there. It’s not quite the same as living there, but it’s better than nothing at all.

You really mustn’t take my disgraceful language against Nazir-Ali too seriously. The sentiment behind my argument, I stand by. The language I resort to from time to time to make my rather provocative points is indefensible and disgraceful. We’re all grown up here, I think most of us see past it. I hope so…

I know a Pakistani Christian family living here quite well. Thanks for mentioning it, do remind me to blog about this subject as it’s something close to my heart due to my links to the Ahmadiyya community in the past – a community more sidelined than even the Christians in Pakistan, but that’s for another post.

Which one Tom? There have been many. Including one in Iraq right now, Rwanda recently, and the “Democratic Republic” of Congo too. Then there was one in Vietnam, there has been an ongoing one in Palestine since 1948, there was one in Cambodia, in the old Soviet Union, one in China, an ongoing one against baby girls in India, one by Pakistan against Bangladesh a few decades back and of course, one in Germany too.

They are all stains on humanity, showing us at our barbarous and murderous worst, making me wonder if the human race actually deserves this planet.

Shahid,

On time in Pakistan the answer is none. ( Though I have travelled in other Muslim countries and India.) Hence your eventual comments are of especial interest if you have spent time there.

On the question of what is an apostate – I have an idea ( and there’s always google and wikipedia ), but I don’t know is what you think.

I was talking to a Pakistani Christian who sat near me at church a few weeks ago. He implied it was dangerous for him to stay in Pakistan for too long. That, in combination with your comments on Nazir-Ali, is what made me think of asking you.

Things seem to be in flux right now and what’s good about blogs like yours is that you get to hear opinions which are not filtered or spun by the media, self appointed community groups or politicians. (I’ve seen links into your blog from other sources probably for just this reason.)

Dear Man in a Shed – how much time have you actually spent in Pakistan?

As for what an apostate is – I think you know. As for what should be done with one – nothing. People should be free to choose their religion, or lack thereof.

Your last question is relevant, but not to this thread. I might discuss them when the current propaganda campaign has died down.
